What is orienteering? Orienteering is a type of sport that requires using a map (and compass) to navigate from point to point in diverse terrain. Participants are given a specially prepared orienteering map, which is used for finding control points in the nature (usually white-orange flags).
Orienteering was originally desgined as a training exercise for military officers, but has developed into many variations. Yet, the most popular variation is the traditional foot orienteering. Orienteering is unique sport because you can do it on your preferred level by walking or running. In orienteering you can compete at any level and age (8-90 years old) and it is basically a race against yourself and the clock while you try to find the fastest route though all the control points.
The forest as a playground? Finland is often called the land of a thousand lakes and lots of forests. In orienteering we use our fabulous nature as a playground. Our forests are safe to walk around in and by learning orienteering you can make your nature outings even more safe. In addition to orienteering, there are also a ton of other activities you can do in the forest such as trail running, berry picking and mushroom hunting.
